The name of our project “Free Scriptures” refers to freedom rather than to price (or “gratis”), and in this sense our project should be understood. In a world where we face artificial technical and legal restrictions, price and costs aren't an issue at all. Our project is a free software
project with the goal to develop software for processing bible texts into all kinds of formats in order to enable a modern, digital usage of them. Our software is published under a free software license such as the Free Software Foundation's GNU Affero General Public License Version 3 or any later version
, so that you too are legally allowed to benefit from our results. To ensure the usability from a technical perspective, our software is based on freely licensed computer system tools, which will enable you to reproduce each step of the production workflow by yourself. Note that the project is non-denominational and without commercial interest (while commercial use isn't prohibited in any way – we just don't pursue commercial activity within the project itself, but help to our best ability in doing so if requested), consisting of individuals who participate to their own responsibility.
With our tools we're able to produce a variety of formats such as PDF, HTML, EPUB and we even find ways to enable physical printed and bound books from it. The production process is influenced by bible typesetting and typography, where a whole lot of customization is possible. Furthermore, we provide additional software tools to generate bible translation comparisons, parallel bibles or interleaved versions from the texts. In future, we may plan to implement software such as a full text concordance generator or collaborative bible study tools.
